Prodigy for Teachers: Class Setup Guide

Setting up a Prodigy teacher class takes about three minutes. Log in to your free teacher account, open All classes, click Create class, give the class a name, pick a grade, and then add your students by hand or share the class code. Once the class exists, your students can start the automatic Placement Test right away.

Before you start

You need a Prodigy teacher account. Teacher accounts are free, and all teacher tools, including class setup, assignments, and reports, are free as well. If you do not have one yet, create it on the Prodigy site by choosing Teacher when you sign up. If you already have an account from a previous school year, your login still works, and there is nothing to rebuild from last year.

Create your class

Follow these steps in your teacher account:

  1. Log in to your Prodigy teacher account.
  2. Select All classes at the bottom left of your screen.
  3. Select the Create class button.
  4. Choose how to build the class. You can import one or more classes using Google or Clever, or start from scratch with a Prodigy Classroom.
  5. If you import through Google or Clever, select the right button and follow the on-screen prompts. Students who already have a Prodigy account linked to their Google or Clever credentials are imported into your class. Students who do not have one yet get a new account created for them.
  6. If you start from scratch, enter a name for your class, select a grade, and select Create Class.
  7. Your new class appears on your All classes page.

That is the whole setup. Name it, choose the grade, and you are set.

Add your students

If you created the class from scratch, there are two ways to bring students in:

  • Add students manually. Select the Add Students Manually button and enter a list of student first names and last initials. Prodigy creates the student accounts for you. Print the login details and hand them out, so nobody is stuck on the first day.
  • Share the class code. Every class gets a unique class code. Students who already have a Prodigy account, or who created one on their own, join by entering your class code when they log in.

Most teachers use the code for students who already play at home, and manual accounts for younger students who have never played before.

Share the class code

Your class code is shown in your teacher dashboard once the class exists. Write it on the board, put it in your class handout, or send it home in the parent letter. Students enter it at login, and they join your class straight away. If a student types the code and nothing happens, check two things first: that they are logged in to the right student account, and that the code matches exactly, letter for letter.

What to do after setup

Once your students are in the class, Prodigy does the first piece of work for you. Every student works through the automatic Placement Test as they play, which gives you a baseline view of their grade level. You do not need to set anything up for this to happen.

After that, set your first Assignment so the practice matches what you are teaching. Open the Assessments tool, create an Assignment, pick the skills, and set the dates. Your students will see the assigned skills as they play.

Finally, send work home. Select the Students tab in your teacher dashboard and click Get parent letters to download a full class set of parent letters with student login information, in English or Spanish. Parents can then create a free parent account and follow their child’s progress from home.

Class limits and co-teachers

New classes have a student limit of 200 students per class. If you try to add more than 200 students to a new class, you will see an error message. For most classrooms this limit never comes up.

If another teacher works with the same students, use the co-teacher feature. A co-teacher must have their own Prodigy teacher account, be in the same school as you, and use the same curriculum. Once added, a co-teacher can see the class, assign work, and view student reports.

Tip: Create the class and print the parent letters before the first lesson, not after it. Students who can log in on day one start their Placement Test on day one, and you get usable baseline data a full week earlier.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Prodigy teacher account really free?

Yes. Teacher accounts are free, and class setup, assignments, and reports are all included at no cost. The paid Membership is a parent purchase and is not needed for any teacher tool.

Can I import my class from Google Classroom or Clever?

Yes. When you create a class, choose the Google or Clever import option and follow the on-screen prompts. Students with an existing Prodigy account linked to those credentials are imported, and new accounts are created for the rest.

How do students join with a class code?

Students log in to Prodigy and enter your unique class code. The code is shown in your teacher dashboard once the class exists. Students with existing accounts and students who created their own accounts can both join this way.

How many students can I add to one class?

New classes have a limit of 200 students per class. If you need more than that, split the students across two classes.

Can another teacher share my class?

Yes, through the co-teacher feature. The co-teacher needs their own Prodigy teacher account, must be in the same school, and must use the same curriculum.
