Zone bosses in Prodigy are the strongest enemies in each part of the game world, and beating one is how you finish a zone’s story and open up new areas. A boss battle works like a normal battle, you answer math questions to cast spells, but the boss has more health, hits harder, and takes more rounds to beat. The way to win is simple: arrive at the right level, bring pets of the element the boss is weak against, and keep answering questions correctly.
What zone bosses are
Every zone in Prodigy has its own story, and at the end of that story sits a boss. A boss is a single strong enemy, usually a powerful pet or creature, that guards the end of the zone’s quests. Beating the boss finishes the zone’s main quest line, moves the story forward, and often opens the way to the next zone. Bosses are meant to be hard, so a boss you cannot beat yet is not a problem, it is a sign to level up and come back.
Bosses are different from wild pets in two ways. First, they have much more health, so the battle lasts several rounds instead of one or two. Second, they hit harder, so a wizard who walks in under levelled will run out of health fast. That is why preparation matters more than luck. For the full tour of the zones, see the Prodigy Zones and Worlds Guide.
Where to find them
Bosses appear at the end of a zone’s quest line, so follow the quests in each zone and the game will lead you to them. Your quest log shows which quests are open and where they take you, and the boss appears when you finish the quests that come before it. Each zone has its own boss, so a player who has only finished the starting forest has only met the earliest bosses, while the later zones hold the harder ones.
The pattern follows the zones: the starting forest has the easiest bosses, and the snowy mountains, the volcanic spire, the shore and the floating islands hold stronger ones. If you are looking for the hardest bosses in the game, they are in the zones you unlock last, and you will need a high level wizard and a trained team to beat them.
How a boss battle works
A boss battle uses the same rules as any other battle. The game asks you a math question, you pick an answer, and a correct answer casts your spell. A wrong answer still casts a weak spell, but it does far less damage, so correct answers matter more against a boss than anywhere else. The boss takes its turn after yours, casting its own spells against you and your pets, and the battle ends when one side runs out of health.
Because a boss has so much health, the battle is a test of patience. You will cast many spells, and you will need to heal when your health gets low. Bringing the right element is the biggest advantage you can have, because a spell of the element the boss is weak against deals extra damage every single round. To learn the element circle, read Prodigy spells and elements.
Preparing for a boss fight
- Level up your wizard first. Complete the zone’s quests and battle wild pets until your level matches the zone, because an under levelled wizard takes too much damage.
- Train your pets, and evolve at least one pet of the element the boss is weak against. A fully evolved pet of the right element is worth more than three pets of the wrong one.
- Check your gear. Better wands, hats and outfits raise your health and spell power, and even a small upgrade helps in a long boss battle.
- Stock up on healing items before the fight, so you can recover health during the battle instead of losing it.
- Read the quest log before you walk in, so you know which boss you are facing and which element it uses.
Beating the boss, step by step
Open the battle with your strongest pet of the element the boss is weak against, and keep it in the fight as long as it can stand. Answer every question carefully, because a correct answer is a strong spell and a wrong answer is a wasted turn. When your health gets low, heal instead of attacking for one round, because a wizard with no health cannot cast at all. If your first pet faints, switch to your next pet of a useful element, and keep the pressure on. Most boss battles are won in the last few rounds, when the boss is low on health and you are still standing, so stay calm and keep answering.
Quests often lead to boss battles, so if you want more practice with the quest flow, see Prodigy quests and battles.
What you win
Beating a zone boss gives you progress, and progress is the real reward. You finish the zone’s story, earn experience for your wizard and your pets, and often unlock the next zone or a new part of the game. Some boss wins also give gold, items or gear. The biggest reward is not the loot, though, it is that the next zone opens up, with new quests, new wild pets to catch, and new bosses to beat.
Frequently asked questions
How do you beat a boss in Prodigy?
Arrive at the right level, bring pets of the element the boss is weak against, heal when your health gets low, and keep answering math questions correctly. Correct answers cast strong spells, which is what wears a boss down.
What is the hardest boss in Prodigy?
The hardest bosses are in the zones you unlock last, and which one feels hardest depends on your level and your team. Any boss becomes beatable once your wizard and pets are levelled up and you bring the right element.
Can you fight a zone boss again?
Bosses are tied to the zone’s quest line, so you meet them as the story takes you there. Your quest log in the game shows which quests and boss battles are open to you right now.
What level should I be for a zone boss?
Your level should match the zone you are in. Finish the zone’s quests and battle wild pets until you can win normal battles there comfortably, then take on the boss.
Do you need membership to beat bosses in Prodigy?
No. Boss battles are part of the main game and open to every player. Membership adds extra pets and items, but it is not needed to beat a zone boss.
