Prodigy pets: how to catch and evolve

Pets are creatures that fight beside your wizard in Prodigy Math. You catch them by battling wild monsters and answering math questions correctly, then they level up through battles and evolve into stronger forms at set levels. Some pets and the newest evolutions need a membership, but many pets can be caught and evolved free.

How to catch a pet

To catch a pet, find a wild monster in a zone and start a battle. Answer the math questions correctly to weaken the monster. When it is weak enough, the game gives you the chance to catch it. The pet then joins your team. Each pet you catch can be named and trained, and you can switch which pets fight beside you. If you want the battle basics first, read how to play Prodigy Math.

Where pets live

Pets live in the zones of the game world, and each zone holds its own pets. Firefly Forest is the early zone where many players catch their first pets, and harder zones hold rarer pets. If you want a certain type of pet, go to the zone where that type lives. New zones open as your wizard levels up, so keep playing the story and quests to reach them.

How pets level up

Pets gain experience by fighting beside you in battles. As a pet levels up, its health, attack, and defence improve, so it hits harder and lasts longer in battle. Use the same pets often to level them fast, and let weaker pets fight in easier battles so they gain experience without losing. A pet that never battles never levels up, so rotate your team instead of using one pet for everything.

How evolution works

Many pets evolve into stronger forms when they reach a set level. Evolution changes how the pet looks and makes it stronger in battle. Each pet has its own evolution level, so check the pet itself to see when it evolves. Two examples from the community wiki show the pattern: Sproot evolves into Budbeak at level 20, and Budbeak evolves into Pompalm at level 40. Embright evolves into Smiloshine at level 20, and Smiloshine evolves into Lioglow at level 40. Terromite evolves into Terrosaur at level 28. Some pets do not evolve at all, and a few only evolve with a membership.

Elements

Every pet has an element, such as fire, water, plant, ice, magic, or astral. Elements matter in battle, because some elements are strong against others. A fire pet hits hard against a plant monster, while a water pet answers a fire monster. Keep one pet of each element you meet, so you always have a strong answer to the monster in front of you. The element is shown on the pet itself, so you can check it before the battle starts.

What membership changes

Membership adds more pets, but it does not change how catching works. The official membership page lists “more pets, gear, buddies and mount” as a paid benefit, and a free account can only keep a limited number of pets. The newest Mythical Epics are the clearest example: they are rare and powerful pets earned through monthly quests, and the latest Mythical Epics go to Plus and Ultra members. If you want the full price list, read Prodigy membership cost and what is free.

Pet bonuses in battle

Pets do more than look good. In battle, your active pet casts its own spells and adds damage to your attacks. A higher level pet with a matching element can turn a hard battle into an easy one. That is why catching and levelling pets is worth the time: a strong team lets your wizard take on harder zones and tougher quests. Frequently asked questions

How do I catch my first pet?

Go to a zone such as Firefly Forest, find a wild monster, and battle it. Answer the math questions correctly to weaken it, then catch it when the game offers the chance.

At what level does a pet evolve?

Each pet has its own set level. For example, Sproot evolves at level 20 and again at level 40, while Terromite evolves at level 28. Check the pet itself to see its evolution level.

Do I need membership to evolve pets?

Some pets evolve free, and some pets and evolutions are members only. The newest Mythical Epics need a Plus or Ultra membership. Most common pets can be caught and evolved without paying.

What are Mythical Epics?

Mythical Epics are rare and powerful pets earned through monthly quests. Plus and Ultra members get access to the latest ones.

How many pets can I keep?

A free account can only keep a limited number of pets. Membership raises the limit and adds more pets to collect, so if you love collecting, check the membership tiers.
